Letter from the President

As I’m taking over as President, I realize the very big

shoes left by Tresa Reed and appreciate the

incredible job she’s done over the past 12 months! Among her many accomplishments, she was able to help grow our club to 49 members, ranking us #3 in Region II. My goal is to continue increasing our membership, while getting more of our members involved as well. While having had 4 years to learn and follow some of the best leaders in our Club, I am now looking forward stepping up to the role as President of Skal International Louisville.

In case any of you aren’t already familiar with it, here is some background on me. Not originally from these parts, I grew up in a small town in Virginia and then moved to Orlando. I was the shore excursion manager for ten different Holland America Line ships throughout most of the 1990’s and was proudly recognized as the top-producing excursion manager in the history of the company. After that, I managed the Entertainment and Programming Departments and staff of 145 crew members on the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, entailing direct interaction with 2600 guests each sailing. Building on past experiences, I know I’ll continue learning from my local Skalleagues, what they do, and how they make Kentucky hospitality the best in the country.

Although not a native of Louisville, I still felt right at home at my first Skal meeting. That is, with the one exception being that I had to wear a tie! I work for a cruise line and have done so for about 25 years (can you say casual clothing?), so I am definitely more accustomed to wearing relaxed, comfortable attire. Despite the fact that I have to wear that same tie (the only one I own) to every Skal meeting, I have followed the unspoken rule since I enjoy seeing everyone each month. But since I’m the president now, here’s a thought; maybe we can lighten up the dress code going forward this year? Stay tuned on this one . . .

Lastly, I wanted to reiterate what an incredible evening we had earlier this month at Jim Beam!  From the pre-boarding wine, to the luxurious and safe motorcoach drive there (BIG thanks to John Miller and his driver), to the fantastic and exclusive evening that followed at Jim Beam, it was a truly memorable night! And next week on Friday June 6, we’ll have another incredible evening with spouses at Lesley Rahner’s house. Please reply via Evite as soon as possible and join us for this elegant Garden Party.
